Every internet user in the country will be asked whether they want to have access to pornography,
David Cameron will say, as he warns that hardcore images are
“corroding childhood”.
A joint British and American “task force” will be created to
tackle obscene websites, while Google and other search engine providers will be required to draw up a “blacklist” of the most
depraved and illegal search terms, the Prime Minister will

APPLE SAYS ITS DEVELOPER SITE WAS HACKED

Apple Inc. told software developers that its website for
them had been hacked and some information may have been stolen.
In response to the attack, which took place Thursday, the
company said it is overhauling its
developer systems, updating software and rebuilding its
database.

Developers look over new apps being displayed on iPads at the Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco in June.
In an email sent to the
developers, Apple said an intruder attempted to secure personal information from the
website. It also said that “sensitive” personal information
on the site is encrypted and
cannot be accessed and that information associated with its
customers wasn’t affected.
“However, we have not been able to rule out the possibility that some developers’ names, mailing
addresses, and/or email addresses may have been accessed,” the company wrote.
Apple said it took the site down Thursday and has been working
around the clock since then intresponse to the attack. “In the
spirit of transparency, we want to inform you of the issue,” the
email said.
The company didn’t say how many developers might have been affected by the attack. But
large numbers of people work on creating software for Apple’s popular iPhones and iPads as
well as its Mac computers. The company says there are 275,000 registered developers for its mobile devices.
The developer connection website contains pre-release
software, technology for testing new programs and information about how to code applications for the company’s various
products. Apple is currently completing work on new versions of its iOS mobile
operating system and its Mac software.
The company hadn’t previously explained why the website
became inaccessible Thursday.
Some online publications reported that developers said
their passwords had been reset.
Apple had largely been spared the high-profile break-ins that
have afflicted some other companies. Sony was attacked in 2011, for example, causing more than 100 million of its customer’s accounts to be compromised.
Hacking groups, including the loosely organized Internet
political group Anonymous, attacked the systems of various
other companies including Nintendo, and government
affiliates and agencies.
Apple assured developers that it
is “completely overhauling” its
developer systems, updating software and working on its
databases.
“In order to prevent a security threat like this from happening
again, we’re completely overhauling our developer systems, updating our server
software, and rebuilding our entire database. We apologize for the significant inconvenience that our downtime has caused you and we expect to have the
developer website up again soon.”
Apple declined to provide any
information about who attacked them, nor whether it was
working with any government agencies or outside investigative teams.
“The website that was breached is not associated with any
customer information,” Tom Neumayr, an Apple spokesman
said. “Additionally, customer information is securely encrypted.”
David Barnard, founder of App Cubby, a company that makes
apps for Apple’s devices, said having the site down is an
inconvenience. But he said he is not worried about the lost data,
since he uses a UPS mailbox for his address and a unique
password that could not be used to tap into other sites.
One potential worry is if the attacker got access to his company’s employer
identification number, the equivalent of a social security number for businesses, “but
from what I understand that
data is stored in a completely separate system and was not
compromised,” Barnard said.

BizNewZ-IRAQ!

GLOBAL BANKS EYE IRAQ BUT QUESTIONS REMAIN

Interest by Citibank and Standard Chartered to expand into Iraq highlights the vast potential of
the country’s banking sector, but the experience of a global rival points to the many pitfalls they
must navigate.
With tens of millions of potential customers, few of whom have bank accounts, the country could provide a windfall for firms that
manage to grab a foothold.
Iraqis are on the hunt for a full range of services, from current
accounts to insurance and mortgages, little of which is currently on offer.
But outdated regulations, a
preponderance of state—owned banks, poor infrastructure, and a litany of other obstacles mean
succeeding in Iraq’s banking sector is no mean feat.
“This is potentially a very, very rich market to do banking in,”
said one Western diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity.
“Potentially.”
The industry has come into the spotlight in recent weeks thanks
to moves by banking giants Citibank and Standard Chartered
to establish their presence in the
country.
“We see Iraq as the next big thing,” Mayank Malik, Citi’s head for Jordan and Iraq, told AFP. “We
see this as a giant which is waking up.”
“We see ourselves as the front—runners. We want the first—
mover advantage.”
Citi will initially look to serve existing clients —— several
international energy companies working in oil—rich south Iraq
are its customers.
But in the longer—term the
multinational is looking to move into commercial and retail
banking, though it has not publicly laid out a timeline.
It has high hopes for the country—— Citi economists project that Iraq will have 50 million people and a $2 trillion economy in
2050.
The latter figure represents a 15-fold increase on current output, and is roughly equivalent to the size of India’s economy today.
And, as the sector develops, virtually the entire range of
banking services are required—— at present, Iraqis have
limited access to loans, insurance, credit cards, mortgages and a swathe of other financial products.
But while Malik voices optimism over the potential of Iraq’s
banking sector, major obstacles persist.
As Citi was opening an office in Iraq last month, HSBC announced shortly thereafter it would pull out of Dar Es Salaam, a local bank
in which it holds a 70 percent stake.

STAY INVESTED IN DEBT FUNDS, SAY EXPERTS!

Fall in bond prices seen as right time to invest in dynamic
schemes
Herd mentality, which has inflicted major losses on investors during times of
unexpected developments, returned to haunt the markets last week. Forgetting the good
returns delivered over the past year, a large number of bond
fund investors, who had started getting jittery since June as the rupee started losing value, suddenly hit the sell button last
week. As a result, many debt funds ended up recording
massive fund outflows.
The cue was Reserve Bank of India’s surprise decision to
increase interest rates on short-term credit with a view to
tightening liquidity and give a leg-up to the sliding rupee.
However, not all’s lost. Industry experts see a window of opportunity in the turmoil that played out in the market last
week. They say the fall in bond prices could provide a good
entry point for investors, who should refrain from panic selling.

RBI’s move
The RBI’s move led to fears that policy rates could move back up
again. This saw the 10-year G-Sec yields spike to 8 per cent, up over 90 basis points from their May lows. This led to a sharp decline in bond prices, since yields and
bond prices move in opposite directions.
Long-term gains
While there was a rush for redemption from bond funds
following the central bank’s move, this knee-jerk reaction
could be unwarranted. Over a
one-year period, most bond funds have returned above 5 per
cent, despite last week’s dip. In fact, funds such as Canara
Robeco Dynamic Fund, IDFC Dynamic Bond Fund and SBI Magnum Income have even
managed double-digit returns over the past year.
The picture, however, turned bleak over the last one month with all funds delivering negative returns, in the range of 1.5 to 6
per cent.
But debt fund managers see a silver lining in this cloud — they think this may be the right time to invest in dynamic bond schemes. Rahul Goswami, CIO-Fixed Income, ICICI Prudential AMC, said, “The time is ripe to
further increase investment allocations into duration funds,
including dynamic bond funds. In the near term, volatility will be there but the opportunity is
great at this point in time. We have always seen that monetary
policy shocks are good periods for investment in debt.”
Concurred Dhruv Chatterji, Senior Analyst at Morningstar: “It would be advisable for existing investors, especially those who
have got in during the last couple of months, not to panic and sell
off in a hurry. Investors, who have a higher risk appetite, can consider this extreme move as a
buying opportunity, and take exposure in debt through a
dynamic bond fund.”
However, investors who cannot digest volatility would be better off putting their money in short-
term and ultra-short-term bond funds now, he added.
Looking forward, fund managers are hopeful of rate cuts and term
the RBI’s present moves as temporary. Santosh Kamath, CIO-
Fixed Income, Franklin Templeton Investments, said: “We remain convinced that lower interest rates are inevitable to alleviate
the macroeconomic situation.
Like in the past, such situations throw up attractive investment
opportunities from a medium-to-long-term perspective.”

Review_SONY XPERIA Z !

SONY XPERIA Z –HANDS ON

With the coming of Xperia Z, the Japanese giant Sony has managed to carve a niche in the high-end Android Smartphone
market. In true sense, the Xperia Z, is a fearless commander in the land 'connected devices' .
GizBot spent close to a month to check whether this exceptional device deserves the title of "Best Smartphone "in India. First and
foremost, we would like to congratulate Sony for making
Xperia Z - a great camera device.
In our opinion, there is no need to spend money on a dedicated
music player or point-and-shoot camera. Many of us tend to say
that Sony should come up with stock Android smartphone.
But here, we differ from what others are saying. Sony's Xperia
UI is not loosely built, as the interface is more intuitive and
you are eligible to use company's flagship services. The device
screen, a 5-inch 1080p Full HD, is charismatic for sure. But there is
a scope for improvement. You
have seen Sony promoting waterproof nature of Xperia Z; it's a plus point. Nonetheless, at
Rs. 38,790, Sony's latest flagship handset, is a decent attempt to show company's new age design sensibilities and an urge to be
back on top. Read our in-depth review in order to taste Sony
Xperia Z.

What's in the box?

Sony Xperia Z (handset)

Design, Display and Aesthetics

Sony's biggest achievement till date is the way company design and manufacture hardware. No one comes close to this Japanese titan. If you remember Xperia S,
the flagship smartphone, announced back in 2012. It
wasn't bad, seriously. The handset was low on both hardware and software despite
being a flagship device.
That said, Sony was reeling under pressure to deliver a stellar phone. Earlier in the year at CES
2013, the makers behind Walkman successfully announced Xperia Z. Without any doubt, we were blown away by the design.
Now we have tested the handset; it's time to share our experience with Xperia Z.
Talking about the design, Sony did a good job by not aping
iPhone or Nokia Lumia 920. The phone looks very simple in
nature. It's not complicated at all.
The engineers over at Sony must have made a good use of geometrical shapes. The phone has flat surface and rectangular in shape. The rear back is made
of glass, a lot like Nexus 4.
After a prolonged use, it is prone to scratches. On the front, you will find not a single button. The three capacitive Android buttons
have been blended inside the software. On the right hand side, there is a power button given which is crafted from aluminum.
Alongside, the power button you will notice Micro SIM slot and
Volume rocker.
On the top of the handset, a 3.5mm headphone jack is given.
On the left hand side, the phone is flanked by USB 2.0 hub and
Micro SD card slot. The phone is razr thin at 7.9mm in terms of
thickness, and weighs
146grams . The phone is perfect, when it comes to design. It feels solid and delicate at the same
time.
The Xperia Z houses a 5-inch display powered by Sony Mobile Bravia Engine 2. The screen is
capable of displaying Full HD resolution (1080 x 1920) at
441ppi. Naturally, at such a high resolution, the colors look natural and vivid.
But the biggest problem with the
phone is its 5-inch Full HD display.
This handset has poor viewing angles .This is in fact, major
problem, and Sony need to address as soon as possible . The
display is gorgeous when it comes to reading on the go,
especially, in the direct sunlight.
One of the highlights of Xperia Z:
Water and dust-proof nature. The phone is sealed from all ends. At one glance, the phone looks ordinary, but in reality Sony made the Xperia Z rugged without
diluting its aesthetics. We submerge the device under water for nearly 15 minutes
(Sony says the device will work for 30 minutes) and thankfully it worked happily after.Overall, the Xperia Z impressed us due on the grounds of earthy design, build quality and gorgeous display.

Indian Motorcycle Takes Aim at Harley-Davidson

In the decades following its bankruptcy in 1953, Indian Motorcycle was the target of several companies that tried unsuccessfully to revive the storied brand, the leading motorcycle manufacturer of its time.
But now Indian has the financial muscle to make it happen. Polaris (PII), the maker of snowmobiles, all-terrain vehicles and Victory motorcycles, bought Indian in 2011 and is moving at full throttle to bring it back to prominence.
Standing in the way is industry giant Harley-Davidson (HOG), a longtime Indian rival back in the day that has amassed a 57% share of the heavyweight cruiser market.
Victory was built 15 years ago as a potential alternative to Harley-Davidson but has amassed only a 5% market share, largely taking a piece out of Japanese competitors Honda (HMC), Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki. Now Indian is taking aim at the market leader, even running a television ad featuring a Harley-Davidson bike sporting a for-sale sign outside the owner’s garage.
Perhaps Indian can pick up where Victory fell short, boasting a brand new motorcycle set to debut early next month and a rich heritage that rivals the lore of Harley-Davidson.
Mike Wolfe, who co-stars alongside Frank Fritz on History Channel’s “American Pickers,” likes Indian’s chances for success in the renewed rivalry.
“Will Indian take Harley-Davidson down to its knees? No, at least not right away,” said Wolfe, a pitchman for Indian who often comes across vintage bikes on his travels across the country. “But now there’s a choice.”
Blending Heritage With Modern Engineering
Founded in 1901, Indian traces its roots to the first American motorcycle. It quickly became the top motorcycle brand, having developed the first-ever V-twin motorcycle and first electric starter. The company built a reputation among everyday bikers, racers and with the military, supplying the U.S. Army with bikes such as the Chief.
When I get one of these, I’m going to be as proud as the guy who bought one in 1948.
- Mike Wolfe, “American Pickers”
The resurrected Indian seeks to combine the styling of yesteryear with modern engineering, exemplified by the 111 cubic-inch Thunder Stroke engine that will power the all-new Chief.
“It’s a phenomenal American story with an entrepreneurial spirit,” said Steve Menneto, Vice President of Motorcycles at Polaris. “We wanted to bring that forward and blend it into what we’re doing with the brand. We want to show riders what we learned from Indian’s history.”
While its heritage is a central part of what Indian is doing, the new Chief isn’t exactly your grandfather’s motorcycle. “We’re going to build bikes into the future,” Menneto added.
Wolfe, whose Antique Archaeology stores are located in LeClaire, Iowa, and Nashville, Tenn., called what Indian is doing “a sort of a double-edged sword,” as the bike builder looks to celebrate its history while “helping people understand there’s an old Indian and a new Indian.”
Menneto compared Indian’s strategy to that of General Motors’ (GM) Chevrolet, which drew on the styling of the late-1960s Camaro when it brought the model back to showrooms for 2010.
The Thunder Stroke—bigger than Harley’s 110 cubic-inch engine—was the first piece of the 2014 Chief that Indian unveiled to kick off its full re-launch. Indian’s 2013 lineup was built around a 105 cubic-inch PowerPlus engine.
Wolfe said the folks at Indian rode the original bikes as much as possible, getting a feel for how the bikes handled, the seat position and other design elements. “They took all of that knowledge with them,” he added.
“We have six or seven styling cues from the 1940s Chief and a new powertrain with the Thunder Stroke,” Menneto said. “We wanted to blend our rich history with a high quality bike and engineering ingenuity.”
Indian’s latest creation will be revealed on Aug. 3 at the 73rd Annual Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota. And two days later, the 2014 Indian Chief will be presented to a nationwide audience on “American Pickers.” Indian is also sponsoring Bike Week on the History Channel.
“I get approached by lots of brands, but this makes a lot of sense for me. I feel like I’m knowledgeable, and I’m proud to talk about Indian,” Wolfe said, noting how viewers of his show are familiar with his affection for Indian bikes. “To the average guy, he knows I’m an Indian guy.”
Gunning for Harley-Davidson
The hardest part begins after the re-launch at Sturgis, as Indian hopes an innovative new engine can rev up sales and help the brand reclaim its position as a major player in the motorcycle world.
Victory currently accounts for most of Polaris’s on-road vehicles unit, which saw its sales jump 64% last year to $240 million. Meanwhile, Harley-Davidson has annual sales of $5.6 billion, outpacing the $3.2 billion in total sales recorded by Medina, Minnesota-based Polaris last year.
Regardless, Polaris is the type of company that Indian needed to regain its stature.
“For it to be owned by Polaris is incredible,” Wolfe said. “Other companies had the passion but not the money. They were just pushing the same product forward. Polaris had the wherewithal to launch a completely new bike.”
With a starting price of $18,999, Indian hopes riders will see the value in buying a bike powered by a 111 cubic-inch engine at that price point. Harley’s Road King is comparatively priced at $17,699 but features a 103 cubic-inch engine.
“Our first goal is to make our bikes affordable. It’s premium compared to competitors, but consumers will realize the value they’re getting. The value will come forward quickly,” Menneto said.
Indian’s 2013 Chief Classic, with the 105 cubic-inch PowerPlus engine, starts at a much higher price point at $26,499.
“They’ve made a better bike and dropped the price,” Wolfe said of the soon-to-be-unveiled Chief.
A Harley-Davidson spokesperson said the company takes all competitors seriously, especially its competitors in the U.S. Competition is good for the industry, the spokesperson added.
“No question, Harley-Davidson is an excellent company and tough competition. They’ve owned the market for heavyweight V-twin motorcycles,” Menneto commented. “Indian can be, and is, a viable choice for consumers. We’re strong competition for Harley-Davidson, hopefully for a long time, and they are also strong competition for us.”
At the heart of Indian's sales effort are independent dealers sprinkled across the U.S. and in international regions like Asia and Europe.
The company is right on schedule with bringing in dealers, Menneto said, and Indian expects to see more dealers show interest after it launches the Chief. He also noted that dealers have confidence in Polaris and its commitment to making Indian a success again.
Indian said it's on target to have between 120 and 140 U.S. dealers in place by the end of this year.
“Our plan is to have a full dealer network in the U.S. and around the world,” Menneto explained.
Indian had its eyes on a global presence right from the start, pursuing dealers in Europe, Japan, China, India and elsewhere.
The European market presents an interesting opportunity for Indian. Many of the 40,000 Indian bikes used for military service were left behind when U.S. troops left Europe after World War II, Polaris’s most recent annual report noted, so the company expects to see strong interest in the region.
“The market is still growing. It’s still not where it was before 2008, but it’s still growing,” Menneto said, speaking about the overall market for motorcycles. “People are really enthusiastic. They’re passionate. It’s a part of their life. There’s a need for choice in the marketplace, and a lot of enthusiasts are looking for a change.”
And for Wolfe, the history and ingenuity behind Indian makes it a compelling choice.
“People want to feel pride in what they own, I don’t care what it is,” said Wolfe, who has been collecting for the last 25 years. “When I get one of these, I’m going to be as proud as the guy who bought one in 1948.”

TELEGRAM SERVICE IN INDIA TO CLOSE AT 9.00 PM ON SUNDAY

The first experimental electric telegraph line was started between Kolkata and Diamond
Harbour in 1850 and it was opened for use by the British East India Company the following year. In 1854, the service was
made available to the public.

The 160-year old telegram service in the country will
operate for the last time on Sunday.
"Tomorrow is the last day fortelegram services. The service will start at 8 am and close by 9 pm,"
BSNL CMD RK Upadhyay told .
"The service will not be available from Monday."
State-run telecom firm BSNL has decided to discontinue telegrams following a huge shortfall in
revenue. The service generated about Rs75 lakh annually, compared with the cost of over Rs100 crore to run and manage it.
The use of telegrams has declined with the spread of mobile phones and the Internet in the country.
The first experimental electric telegraph line was started between Kolkata and Diamond
Harbour in 1850 and it was opened for use by the British East India Company the following year. In 1854, the service was
made available to the public.
There are about 75 telegram centres in the country, with less
than 1,000 employees to manage them. BSNL will absorb these
employees and deploy them to manage mobile services, landline telephony and broadband
services.
Faced with declining revenue, the government had revised telegram charges in May 2011,
after a gap of 60 years. Charges for inland telegram services were hiked to Rs27 per 50 words.

Shall we say a Good Bye to Telegram!!!

R.I.P AMAR BOSE!

'BOSE' FOUNDER & CHAIRMAN, AMAR BOSE DIES @ AGE 83

Acoustics pioneer Amar Bose, founder and chairman of the
audio technology company Bose Corp., known for the rich sound of its small tabletop radios and
its noise-canceling headphones popular among frequent fliers,
has died at age 83.
Bose's death was announced Friday by the company's president, Bob Maresca, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where Bose began his acoustics research and was on the faculty for more than 40 years.
Details about Bose's death weren't immediately available.
Bose founded the company, based in Framingham, just
outside Boston, in 1964. Maresca said the company will remain privately held.
"Dr. Bose founded Bose Corporation almost 50 years ago
with a set of guiding principles centered on research and innovation," Maresca said in a written statement. "That focus
has never changed."
The company's products include elegant Wave system radios boasting "lifelike, room-filling
sound," cushioned QuietComfort headphones for reducing background noises such as airplane engines, home theater accessories and computer speakers.
In 2011, Bose gave MIT the majority of Bose Corp. stock in
the form of non-voting shares
whose dividends are used to support education and research.
MIT does not participate in
management or governance of the company.
Bose, who was born and raised in Philadelphia to parents who were natives of India, received his bachelor's degree, master's degree and doctorate from MIT,
all in electrical engineering.
Bose was asked to join the faculty in 1956, and he accepted
with the intention of teaching for no more than two years, the
university said. He continued as a member of the MIT faculty until 2001.
The university said Bose made his mark in research and in
teaching.
Bose started a research program
in physical acoustics and psychoacoustics, leading to the development of patents in acoustics, electronics, nonlinear
systems and communication theory.
"As long as there are interesting problems to solve, I'll stay active," Bose said in a 2005 interview.
MIT President L. Rafael Reif called Bose "an extraordinarily gifted
leader."
"He made quality mentoring and a joyful pursuit of excellence, ideas and possibilities the
hallmark of his career in teaching, research and business," Reif said in a statement.
Bose loved teaching, said his son,Vanu G. Bose.
"While my father is well known for his success as an inventor
and businessman, he was first and foremost a teacher," the son said. "I could not begin to count
the number of people I've met who've told me that my father
was the best professor they ever
had."
Bose was given many awards and honors during his lifetime.
He was a Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholar, an elected member of
the National Academy of Engineering and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a fellow of the Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
In the 2005 interview, Bose said he tried to let his curiosity be a
guiding principle as he demonstrated an experimental,Bose Corp.-designed car
suspension system.
"Even our financial people were trying to get the engineers to
discourage me, because they all saw money going into it," said Bose, a lifelong tinkerer who began repairing radios as a
teenager. "But some things you just believe in."

MALALA- ICON OF THE WORLD EDUCATION!

NOT AFRAID OF TERROR THREATS,MALALA TELLS UN

Malala became a global icon for
girls' education after being brutally attacked by Taliban
militants while on her way to school on October 9, 2012.

Pakistani teen activist Malala Yousafzai today told the UN that
she would not be silenced by terrorist threats, as she gave her first public speech since being shot in the head by the Taliban.
"They thought that the bullet would silence us, but they failed,"
Malala who turned 16 today, said at the UN General Assembly as
she appealed to the international community to put in greater efforts to get children into schools.
"Lets pick up our books and pens. They are our most powerful weapons. One child, one teacher, one book and one
pen can change the world.
Education is the only solution. The terrorists thought they would change my aims and stop my ambitions, but nothing changed in life, except this:
weakness, fear and hopelessness died. Strength, courage and
fervour was born," she said in her speech that saw many standing ovations.
To mark her birthday, the UN has declared July 12 as 'Malala Day'.
At the heart of 'Malala Day' is a call to improve the lives of some 57 million unschooled children
by improving education access
by 2015.Malala became a global icon for girls' education after being brutally attacked by Taliban
militants while on her way to school on October 9, 2012.
The Taliban said they shot her because they opposed her efforts to promote girls' education.
They have made it clear she remains a potential target.
She was flown to the UK for life-saving treatment and still lives there, but the attack has greatly
boosted her campaign for greater educational opportunities for girls.
Malala has been named by Time magazine as one of the most influential people in 2013 and
has reportedly secured a USD 3
million contract for a book on her life story.
"This frail young girl who was seriously injured has become
such a powerful symbol not just
for girls' right to education, but for the demand that we do
something about it immediately," former British prime minister
Gordon Brown, UN envoy on education who organised World
Malala Day, said.
"There will be no compromise with any religious extremist who says girls should not go to school or stop going to school at 10," he told CBS News.
Malala will also hand over a petition to UN Secretary General
Ban Ki-moon signed by more than 330,000 people calling on
the 193 UN member states to finance teachers, schools and
books to meet the educational goal.

NEWS: NOKIA LUMIA 1020

Nokia Lumia 1020

MSRP: $299.00

Review:

You can sum up Nokia's just-unveiled
Lumia 1020 in three words: 41,megapixel, camera!

Teased and leaked to death up to the very last minute before the big reveal, the Lumia 1020's 41-megapixel shooter is what makes Nokia's next marquee Windows phone, and what gives hardware jockeys a reason to salivate.
The Windows Phone 8 device will sell in
the U.S. exclusively at AT&T for a hefty $
299.99 with two-year contract. Preorders
begin July 16, with the Lumia 1020
becoming available online and in stores
July 26. (The Lumia 1020 will also sell
globally.)
It's all about the camera .Make no mistake about it: the Lumia 1020's stunningly enormous image resolution is this smartphone's single killer feature and sole reason for being.
Yep, the 1020 puts the mega back in megapixels.
Here, Nokia pairs an ultralarge camera
sensor with the company's PureView
image-processing software, finally
bringing us the smartphone we hoped the Lumia 920 and its many variants
would be.
Camera geeks looking for the nitty-gritty
will find six-lens Carl Zeiss optics (as in
the recently unveiled Lumia 925), which
also takes on wide angles.
It has high-resolution 3x zoom, autofocus (you can manually focus, too),and a dual-flash system. A smaller LED flash complements the larger Xenon flash
-- a design we saw in Verizon's Lumia 928 -- and the entire shooter captures 1080p HD video at a rate of 30 frames per second.
Ball bearings surrounding the lens
promise image stabilization, which CEO Stephen Elop demonstrated onstage with photos he took on a wobbly boat. We
suspect that ball bearings replaced the
stabilizing springs found in the Lumia
920 to conserve space and keep the camera mount profile as low as possible.
Nokia has also made strides -- and had
successes -- with its low-light photos. In
fact, the Lumia 928's camera has the best
low-light quality of any phone's that I've
seen, with the iPhone 5 a close second in
my photo tests. Nokia aims for even more improved low-light performance from its Lumia 1020.
Nokia's Pro Camera settings boast controls that let shutterbugs and serious photographers easily navigate their
options on the 41-megapixel beast,
including manual exposure settings and
long exposure times. The camera app also includes a tutorial, which sounds helpful for newbies wanting to learn how to use their high-octane phone, though we'll have to wait and see what the phone can teach us.
Couple that with Windows Phone camera apps, called lenses, that layer on
additional settings you won't find in the
native camera app, and you have an
interesting camera story that -- Nokia
hopes -- will run Samsung's 16-
megapixel Galaxy S4 Zoom smartphone
camera into the ground.
We got a chance to try out the Lumia 1020's camera app, which felt lively when fired up, taking photos quickly.
Manipulating the Nokia's graphical camera settings was also intuitive once
we got the hang of it. We did notice that
the phone's fancy Map app took a while
to launch and stuttered a bit when we tried the "Here" augmented-reality
function.
Forty-one megapixels amounts to a lot of
captured information, more than most
people can and will really use, but -- as
with the Symbian-birthed Nokia 808
PureView before it -- the Lumia 1020's
higher megapixel count translates into a
5-megapixel image with lossless
zooming for higher-quality cropped
photos.
In the Lumia 1020, Nokia is extending
this "oversampling" method to video as
well, which could mean some really high-fidelity HD captures when you zoom in. It isn't just about images with Nokia. Audio technology that Nokia calls "rich recording" promises to capture clear,distortion-free sound even in loud
surroundings.
Design and specs
Of course, the matte white, black, or
yellow Lumia 1020 is more than just a
camera. Toss the large, round shooter
module aside and it looks a lot like the
Lumia 920 phones, both in terms of the
squared corners and rounded spines,
and also its guts.
Close up, there are a few differences
between the two handsets. When we got a chance to handle the new Lumia 1020
in the flesh, the phone certainly impressed with its build quality and premium feel. Like its predecessor's, the 1020's chassis is a unibody piece molded
from high-quality polycarbonate. It also
sports similar smoothly rounded edges and a slightly curved back, making it comfortable to hold.

BUZZ CRICKET!

CALM DHONI HELPS INDIA A THRILLING WIN FINAL

Skipper MS Dhoni helped India overcome a mid-innings collapse and guided them to a thrilling 1- wicket victory over Sri Lanka in the tri-series final at Port of Spain. India seemed to have the
game in the bag after having bowled Sri Lanka out for 201, but
the Islanders, backed by a terrific spell by Rangana Herath, came
back strongly. Only MS Dhoni stood in their way at the end and
the Indian skipper stole the game away from them with 3 big
hits off the last over off Shaminda Eranga. With 15 required of the final over, MSD
smashed a six off the second ball,a four off the next and another
maximum to wrap up the game and the series in style.
India were provided a solid platform by Rohit Sharma, who
hit a composed fifty to take the team to 139/3. But they were
soon setback and reduced to 167/8, giving Sri Lanka control.
However, Dhoni hit a brilliant 45 to help India get over the line.
Earlier in the innings, India suffered early setbacks during
their chase with Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli perishing to Shaminda Eranga. Sharma then dropped anchor and together
with Dinesh Karthik helped India ease back into contention. Just when India looked like they would canter to a win, Herath struck for SL. He had Karthik out
caught at slip to put the game on level ground.
Sharma once again found an able partner in Suresh Raina and soon brought up his fifty as India crossed the 100 run mark. With the required run-rate not too high, Raina and Sharma were able to play watchfully and choose the bowlers to attack.
Sharma made full use of the opportunities to bring up his fifty
soon and seemed well set to see India through.
Once again, it was left to Herath to bring back SL into the game
and the left-armer struck thrice in quick succession to remove
Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja
and R Ashwin and leave India in dire straits.
Dhoni watched helplessly from the other end as the wickets tumbled and India were staring
at defeat at 167/8. Eventually, the Indian skipper showed why he is so highly regarded as the best
finisher in limited overs cricket as he soaked up the pressure before delivering the hammer blow in the last over.
Batting first, Sri Lanka's innings turned out to be a tale of two halves as they wasted a fine start
and ended up with a total that was at least 40 runs behind the
target they would have set for themselves. The Islanders were in an extremely comfortable position at 171/2 with a little
over 10 overs left. But some extremely shoddy batting coupled with a good effort from the Indian bowlers saw Mathews' men lose their last 8 wickets for just 30 runs and they were bowled out for 201.
The SL top order batted around the stylish Kumar Sangakkara who hit a composed 71 off 100
balls. Lahiru Thirimanne and Mahela Jayawardene too chipped in with vital contributions but
none of them were able to carry on from their starts.
SL had made a steady start to proceedings but India came back
strongly thanks to Bhuvneshwar Kumar's double blow, accounting
for both the openers. Sangakkara took over after this and together with Thirimanne helped set a strong platform for Sri Lanka.
However, the Indian spinners were on top of their game towards the end and picked up
wickets at regular intervals to stifle the Lankan progress. Jadeja was the wrecker-in-chief with a 4 wicket haul while R Ashwin too picked up 2 important wickets to contribute to the cause. Ishant
Sharma too picked up 2 quick wickets at the end to leave SL with a sub-par total.

Samsung Electronics on Tuesday launched a
compact Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and
Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom in the Indian
market, priced at Rs 27,900 and Rs 29,900
respectively.
The new Galaxy S4 mini has a 4.27” qHD
Super AMOLED display and weighs 108g. With a compact design, the smartphone is
equipped with a 1.7GHz dual core processor and an 8-megapixel rear-facing camera and 1.9-megapixel HD front-facing camera. The
Galaxy S4 mini supports many features and services provided by the Galaxy S4.
Special features such as Sound & Shot, which uniquely stores sound and voice together as pictures are taken, and Panorama Shot, which
allows users to photograph the full view of their surroundings, ensure no memory is lost.
Photos taken by Galaxy S4 mini are
automatically gathered and saved according to the user’s timeline, geo-tagging information, or a specific event to create a photo album.
The Galaxy S4 mini makes international travel easy with S Translator, which provides instant
text or voice translation at email, text message or ChatON.
The Galaxy S4 Zoom combines the stylish
heritage of the latest Galaxy S4 smartphone
with advanced photographic capabilities. The
Galaxy S4 Zoom runs on Android Jelly Bean
4.2 and boasts many of the same features as the recently launched Galaxy S4, including Touchwiz, which lets you fully customize various aspects of your device including the lock screen and notification bar, for a truly personal mobile experience.
With the revolutionary Zoom Ring, the user can access Galaxy S4 Zoom’s key features in a
simple and intuitive way. Zoom Ring will
activate the In-Call Photo Share feature, letting users capture and send an image directly via MMS to whoever he/she is talking to. For easy
camera navigation, the Zoom Ring can be
used to activate the Quick Launch and
Shortcut features, giving users instant access to multiple camera modes including Auto,
Gallery and Smart Mode with a simple twist.

far away or up close and personal, in all light conditions, without having to carry heavy
camera gear around. Furthermore, the built-in Optical Image Stabilizer (OIS) helps keep the camera perfectly still even when you’re not, reducing blur and stabilizing the image,
resulting in high-quality photos and video.
The powerful xenon flash ensures high
quality photos even in low light.
Announcing the launch of the new devices, stated Manu Sharma, Director – Samsung Mobile, “As communication becomes increasingly visual in nature, people wish to

highest quality possible and the Galaxy Zoom fulfils this need by combining the advanced functionality and connectivity of the Galaxy S4 with the high quality photographic
experience you’d expect from a compact camera. The Galaxy mini on the other hand, provides consumers with a new way to enjoy
the flagship Galaxy S4 experience.”
The Galaxy S4 zoom is launched with
attractive introductory offers of a free flip cover, interest free EMI Offer for 6 months and 2 GB 3G Data free per month for 3 months from Reliance.
The Galaxy S4 is launched with an
introductory offer of 2 GB 3G Data free per
month for 3 months from Reliance.
With the launch of these devices, Samsung has a range of 14 Smart phones in its product portfolio, priced between Rs. 5240 and Rs. 40,300
Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini: Powerful enough for those who can't afford Galaxy S4

The Performance:

While it's tough to guess how well the Galaxy S4 Mini will perform all around the world, the specs do tell a promising story. First up, there
are up to six bands for global LTE support,
plus HSPA+ 42 speeds, and 3G and 2G fail-
safes.
LTE-ready builds of the Mini won't come to every market, but if you've got LTE phones
where you live, that's the version you should expect to see when and if the handset lands in a store near you. Otherwise, you'll get a 3G version of the phone, and, in some markets, even a dual-SIM device. The double-barrel
configuration has its benefits, but don't hold your breath for a dual-SIM Mini to hit every country .
Now what about raw computing power?
Unlike the superpowered quad-core or octa-core Galaxy S4, the GS4 Mini will pack a 1.7GHz dual-core processor under its hood. That's completely respectable, depending on the chipset's make and model, and I'll guess that most people won't miss the Galaxy S4's high-octane gaming speeds.
The phone's smaller screen size is one
explanation for the Mini's 1,900mAh battery, which should still keep the phone charged.

SMART REVIEW : KARBONN S5 TITANIUM

REVIEW: KARBONN S5 TITANIUM

There has been a flood of budget phablets in the Indian market for the last few months. Every mobile phone maker has come out with
one or the other phablet to tap this increasingly lucrative
smartphone segment. This is not just the case with India, the
entire South Asia seems to be hooked to the large-screen
smartphones, which solve the problem of keeping two devices
at all times.
Like other indigenous mobile phone companies, Karbonn
Mobiles is also not far behind in this trend. The company launched its first budget phablet in the form of S1 Titanium earlier this year and it followed up with
S5 Titanium in March. They have also launched S2 Titanium and S9 Titanium smartphones.
We know we are a bit late in reviewing S5 but as they say, it is
better late than never.
We have seen the entry of full HD or HD display sporting budget phablets in the country in the last
few weeks, so with its considerably humble specifications but decent pricing;
does it make sense to go for S5 Titanium? We will find out in this review.

HARDWARE

Despite the large 5-inch display on-board, Karbonn S5 Titanium
does not feel as heavy as other devices in the same segment. The
slim and curvy design ensures that you can comfortably hold
the phone.
S5 is fully made of glossy plastic and looks nice in hand but both screen and back of the phone are fingerprint magnets. Within minutes of using the phone, you
will see smudges all over the device. The back cover is also
very prone to scratches.
Talking about the specifics, the front of Karbonn S5 Titanium is largely taken by the 5-inch display apart from the ear-piece,
capacitive Android buttons, front camera and sensors. The back is pretty much clean apart from the 8-megapixel rear camera, LED flash and loud-speaker. Volume
rocker and power button are present on each-sides, while the
top houses microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack. We found the
volume rocker to be too thin and gave a lot of problems during the review period.
Overall, the design and build quality of the phone is decent
and apart from the slim volume rocker and smudge prone body of the phone, we did not face any functional issues.

DISPLAY

Karbonn packs a qHD display on S5 instead of FWGA or WVGA
present in similar priced phablets, which is a good thing.
It might not have the sharpness of an HD display but it still works quite nicely. The colour reproduction is good; however the viewing angles could have
been better.
Although the touch sensitively and multi-touch performance are decent, but we found touch to be
overzealous during scrolling and there are quite a few accidental
taps, which were not desired.

Performance/ Battery Life

Thanks to the presence of 1.2GHz
quad-core Qualcomm
Snapdragon S4 Play MSM8625Q processor
, the overall performance of the
phone is quite snappy. We did not find any lag or jitters during
the normal usage and the even the casual gaming performance
was great. Playing games like Temple Run 2, Angry Birds or
even Dead Trigger is not an issue on the phone.
Coming to the multimedia
performance, the phone plays 720p HD video clips perfectly but it can’t play 1080p full HD.
Speaker is loud enough, however we did find the ear-piece volume slightly low during the calls.
Connectivity options like Wi-Fi and Bluetooth work fine, so does the dual-SIM support.
On the battery front, the phone comes with a 2,000mAh Li-Ion
battery, which packs enough juice to keep the phone powered
throughout a day on medium usage; heavy users might need
to plug-in the phone during the day.

SOFTWARE

Karbonn S5 Titanium runs on almost stock version of Android
4.1.2 out of the box. Being the vanilla version of the stock, the software feels snappy. Karbonn
has made a few tweaks to improve the user experience on the phone including quick
settings in notification shade.
There are some other changes in the UI too, all of them visual but
they don’t add any usefulness to the overall experience.
In terms of the pre-loaded apps,Karbonn has included Kingsoft
Office, TOI app, Whatsapp, and File Manager etc. All of which can be downloaded for free from Google Play, so pre-loading them
does not really add any value apart from the fact that take over
some crucial internal storage space and cannot be un-installed.

Camera

The smartphone packs an 8-megapixel rear camera on-board,
which gives some good outdoor shots during day-light, however during indoor usage; you will
find noise creeping in the images especially when viewed at the full resolution.
The video recording quality is also nice.

10 KEY FACTORS OF BEING A GOOD LEADER

Effective leadership is just one key element in the success of a
group and although people are not born leaders, the majority of people can learn to be effective leaders.
"Being the leader doesn't make you one, because leaders don't
automatically get the respect and acceptance of their group members; so in order to earn the
leadership of their group and have a positive influence on the group members, leaders learn some specific skills and
methods." Thomas Gordon,Gordon Training.
Ensuring that your business has strong leaders and also the
correct skills in leadership is crucial to being successful and
will open up and increase opportunities available.
You senior team may already possess many of the innate leadership qualities below,Collingwood Search & Selection
have used behavioral Profiling by Thomas International to provides an accurate insight into how
people behave at work, answering questions such as:
what are their strengths and limitations? How do they communicate? Are they self-starters? Are they leaders? And
what motivates them?

1. Set the right example

If the management team is smartly dressed and punctual in the mornings, then this will encourage your staff to replicate
this behavior. Being a good role model in your business is vital if you want your staff members to be as professional as you are.
Lead by example in everything you do at work. It can be very
difficult to reprimand a member of staff for something if you are
a habitual offender.

2. Continuous development of your leadership skills

In order to become a great leader, you have to understand your own attributes and
limitations. By seeking continuous self-improvement
means that you will be strengthening your own skill set and ensuring that you have the right skills to be an effective leader.

3. Be technically proficient

Being an effective leader also means you need to stay one step
ahead of your team when it comes to technology that may
impact your industry. Subscribe to industry blogs and read white
papers that will help you keep up to date with technological
advancements in your sector.

4. Make sound and timely decisions

It is imperative that you are in a position to make informed
decisions quickly. By ensuring you are up to speed with good
problem solving, decision making
and planning tools, you will be in a position of strength to lead your team.

5. Seek and take responsibility for your actions.

As a leader, your team will look to you for guidance and inspiration and ways to take the business to new heights. And when things go wrong, they will turn to you to take corrective and decisive action.

6. Positive Attitude

A positive environment is more
likely to create a more engaged and productive workforce. And by displaying enthusiasm and
confidence, a good leader will understand the impact that they
can have on this working environment.
Obviously it isn't always possible to have a positive attitude towards every task that a leader is likely to tackle. But the more
negativity you can keep from impacting your workforce, the
more likely you are to seepositive results.

7. Keep your team informed

Your team will look to you to keep you informed at all times, so try to keep abreast with everything happening in your
business and in your sector. You will then be in a position to
cascade that information down
to your team who will hopefully appreciate your efforts.

8. Get to know your team

David Brent, the loveable boss from BBC's The Office, wanted to be everybody's chum. His
management style was to be an entertainer, the office clown if you like. Unfortunately, this
management tactic saw everybody quickly lose respect
for him and he was unable to manage himself, let alone a team.
Management dictates that you have a degree of separation from your team. And you should always bear in mind that your
team will be made up of individuals who have different
outlooks and abilities and will be at different stages of their careers. Therefore it is vital to
understand what makes them tick and to remember that what motivates one won't necessarily
motivate another.

9. Don't be afraid to delegate

One of the key skills a team manager has to quickly learn is the importance of delegation.
Successful delegations begin by matching people with tasks. And if there are gaps in team member's skill sets, a good
leader will quickly be able to identify and manage these gaps.

10. Ensure that tasks are understood, supervised and competed

Before you delegate a task to anyone in your team, it is vital
that you understand what is involved in the task and what a
satisfactory outcome will look like.
If your team is asking questions about the task, try to ensure you
are armed with the answers.

Thank You!

Biz-CRIME FACTS!

CYBER CRIME: NEW THREATS, NEW DEFENCES

By Ashish Dhawan

Cyber crime is becoming increasingly sophisticated.
Threats which once arose from Botnets have now evolved to
DDoS attacks wherein multiple computers and internet connections are used to disrupt host services and restrict user access to servers and network resources. Recently, the Spamhaus Project, a spam fighting organisation, fell victim to what is regarded as the
largest DDoS attack at 300 billion bits per second. These are
instances at how sophisticated the world of cyber crime has become and the potential difficulties CIOs face in restricting
these threats. With the increasing
popularity of Big Data and BYOD,the requirement of more
effective cyber security is extremely high.

On the rise :
Recently, well-choreographed attacks on two India-based card processing companies, where
hackers raised bank balances and withdrawal limits, garnered widespread media visibility. The
exploits which resulted in a combined loss of $45 million from two Middle Eastern banks
has left even cyber crime experts both baffled and impressed by the sheer technical sophistication of the attack.
In other recent instances, banks in South Korea fell victim to cyber-attacks where hackers
planted malware into the computers of six organisations.
Around 32,000 companies were affected by the incident. It was reported that the IP address did not reveal the perpetrators of the attack, as they were routed through addresses in other
countries to hide their identities.
The above instances of cyber attacks underscore the growing complexity and challenges we
face while securing our valuable digital assets. Unlike physical
assets, the vulnerability of virtual
systems is much higher and despite the progress in security technologies, we are still vulnerable.

Numbers say it all:
A recent study by the Ponemon Institute entitled ‘Efficacy of
Emerging Network Security Technologies’ showcased the
approach that companies are taking towards combating
security issues, and the investments they are making to protect their data. The study,
which was commissioned globally by Juniper Networks, revealed that on average the
effectiveness of security solutions adopted by Indian
organisations is only 4.7 based on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being
the most secure.
Close to 5,000 IT security practitioners surveyed globally
agreed on one thing. Threats in terms of financial losses, brand
value degradation and regulatory impact, have now encouraged organisations to consider security as a very important part
of their IT strategy. This has impelled IT practitioners to
deploy solutions that the report terms as emerging network
security technologies that includes intrusion prevention systems, firewalls and VPNs.
The survey, which took into account the input of 554 Indian
professionals across various organisations, also attributed the
growing sophistication of cyber attacks and changing threat landscape as reasons why organisations are investing in emerging network security
technologies. The issues that keep most IT security practitioners up at night are the theft of their intellectual property, including research and
development,business strategies and industrial processes.
Some of the results of the report are as follows:
64 per cent say securing Web traffic is their biggest security
concern.
63 per cent say emerging network security technologies
only address part of the cyber security threats that they face.
On an average, respondents say the security posture of their organisation is only 4.7 based on
a scale of 10 being very effective.
Respondents also rate their organisation’s ability to quickly
detect and prevent cyber attacks as fair (4.8 and 4.6, respectively on a scale of 10 being excellent).
The results of the Ponemon Institute survey are a good
example to indicate the increased awareness companies
have regarding various security threats and their implications, within organisations. Companies of almost all sizes have considered, analysed and deployed solutions that they feel are effective at detecting known
and or potential threats.

Being proactive:
What companies need to realise is that the current generation of
solutions they are using is only capable of detecting threats
which have already attacked, or in the process of attacking, their systems. What they need are solutions which can stop hackers before they have breached the company’s data.

dealing in securities of Gillette, either directly or indirectly except for the purpose of complying with MPS norms, till the company takes its public shareholding
from current 11.24% to minimum 25%.
The market regulator’s order
against Gillette comes just days after the latter’s appeal was
dismissed by the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT). The
company had filed an appeal with SAT in November challenging Sebi’s refusal to the
company’s submitted proposal for complying with minimum 25% public shareholding norms.
The SAT in its hearing on July 3 had also vacated the interim
relief it had granted to Gillette on May 30, 2013 — three days
before the June 3 deadline— to meet MPS norms.
The market regulator’s order
would result in freezing of voting
rights and corporate benefits like dividend, rights, bonus shares,
split, etc of the promoter group with respect to excess promoter holding of 55%, as per Sebi’s
prescribed formula, till such time the company complies with the MPS.
The regulator has also restrained the promoter/promoter group and directors of the non-compliant company from holding any new position as a director in any listed company, till such time Gillette complies with the MPS requirement.
Sebi had earlier passed similar order against 105 companies on June 4, 2013, for failing to
comply with the MPS
requirement. The interim order issued then did not cover three companies including Gillette,
since the matter was sub judice.

R.I.P Doug Engelbart!

DOUG ENGELBART, INVENTOR OF COMPUTER MOUSE, DIES AT 88

Doug Engelbart, the inventor of the computer mouse and
developer of early incarnations of
email, word processing programmes and the Internet, has died at the age of 88. The
Computer History Museum, where Engelbart had been a
fellow since 2005, said he died early today. The museum in
Mountain View,California, was
notified of the death in an email from his daughter, Christina. The cause of death wasn't immediately known.
Back in the 1950s and '60s,when mainframes took up entire rooms and were fed data on
punch cards, Engelbart already was envisioning a world in which people used computers to share ideas about solving
problems. He said his work was all about "augmenting human
intellect," but it boiled down to making computers user-friendly.
One of the biggest advances was the mouse, which he developed in the 1960s and patented in
1970.
At the time, it was a wooden shell covering two metal wheels:
An "X-Y position indicator for a display system." The notion of
operating the inside of a computer with a tool on the outside was way ahead of its
time. The mouse wasn't commercially available until 1984,
with Apple's new Macintosh. In fact, Engelbart's invention was so early that he and his colleagues
didn't profit much from it. The mouse patent had a 17-year life span, and in 1987 the technology fell into the public domain meaning Engelbart couldn't
collect royalties on the mouse when it was in its widest use.
At least 1 billion have been sold since the mid-1980s. Among
Engelbart's other key
developments in computing, along with his colleagues at
Stanford Research Institute (SRI)and his own lab, the Augmentation Research Center, was the use of multiple
windows. Engelbart's lab also helped develop ARPANet, the
government research network that led to the Internet.

Biz-ACER Tablet!

ACER ICONIA A1-810 TABLET: IT'S NO iPAD MINI, BUT PRICE-WISE,DEFINITELY AFFORDABLE

Into a market that is full of tablets, Acer has jumped in with
its Iconia A1-810. The play is on price (low budget), but there are
a few tweaks that sets it apart from the rest.
If you were thinking the Acer Iconia A1-810 is an iPad Mini
replacement for Android fans, you'd be wrong. Sure, on the
surface, the A1-810 aims to replicate the iPad Mini's appeal,
but in reality, it is a budget Android tablet.
Both tablets share the same 7.9-inch screen size, 4:3 aspect ratio,
and subpar resolution (by today's standards), but that's kind of where the similarities
end. The A1-810 is noticeably thicker than the iPad Mini and
aesthetically, while it's not homely, it probably won't be
winning any design awards.
And while Android has seen massive improvements to its app ecosystem, it's still no iOS. So a more apt comparison would be Google's Nexus 7. Both tablets run the latest version of Android (4.2.2), but the A1-810 has a
Micro-HDMI port and its storage can be expanded using a
microSD card.
However, Google's 7-incher sports a more comfortable build
and a sharper screen, and since it's made by the people who built
the operating system it's running on, it will get updates a lot
quicker.
Having said that, the Iconia A1-810 isn't a bad tablet, just
one that fails to stand out in any meaningful way. However, its low
- as 8-inch tablets go - street price ($200 for 16GB of storage;
$170 for 8GB) makes some of its shortcomings easier to swallow.

Design :
For a small tablet, the Iconia A1-810 is chunky, and it feels
hollow despite its weight and girth. Taking a cue from the
Nexus 7's design rather than the iPad Mini's, the top and bottom bezels are thicker than the left
and right ones, adding to its overall robust build. The tablet
would look sleeker with thinner bezels, but it is apparent that thin is not in with this model. So far from being an Android version of the iPad Mini, its clunky design
turns it into a bloated knockoff.
There are positives present of course. The power button on the
top edge and volume rocker on the right edge protrude slightly
and are easy to find without having to go searching for them.
The microSD card slot and microphone are directly beneath
the volume rocker, with a shutdown pinhole and Micro-
HDMI port sitting below them.
The bottom edge of the tablet is home to the Micro-USB port and headphone jack.
In fact, this is where it leapfrogs its rivals. The inclusion of a
microSD slot and Micro-HDMI port
gives the Iconia A1-810 a leg up on the port-challenged iPad Mini and Nexus 7.
With no ambient light sensor, the screen's brightness has to be
adjusted manually. However, thanks to the inclusion of
Android 4.2.2, the brightness setting -- accessed via a quick
swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen -- is only a
few steps away. Due to the screen's relatively dim maximum brightness setting, you will
probably end up running it on full blast the majority of the time, making an automatic brightness
adjustment seem less necessary.
Medium-rare Android The Iconia A1-810 runs an almost pure version of Android
but its low build quality fails to take advantage of some of Jelly Bean 4.2.2's fun features. Acer's Touch WakeApp feature is meant to provide easy access to your
locked device via different gestures made on the screen.
Placing five fingers on top of the display unlocks the device and tapping two thumbs on the
locked screen launches the camera or a user-designated
app. I'm personally a fan of apps that make the most mundane
tasks appear like works of magic, but it was as if I needed to
actually cast a spell to get the feature to function correctly. The
time it took continually tapping
on the device to unlock the screen or activate the camera far surpassed the few swipes of a finger that would traditionally cue the same result.
Not to say it didn't work-- the function was successful when I
didn't need it. Before I eventually gave up on the app (you can
easily disable it in the settings), I unknowingly launched the camera various times while it
was in my bag and sometimes while I was simply carrying it
around. The Touch WakeApp on the Iconia A1-810 falls flat due to its inability to make already easy
tasks even easier.

IIM NEWS!

QUITTING JOBS TO JOIN B-SCHOOLS!

New IIM batches have more students with work experience
The global economic slowdown notwithstanding, new batches at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) are seeing a higher representation of
candidates with work experience vis-à-vis freshers. A tough
employment environment has
not deterred candidates from giving up their jobs and getting an IIM tag to acquire better
career profiles.
For instance, at IIM-Calcutta, the percentage of candidates with up to 24 months of work
experience in the current batch of 2013-15 has increased to 42
per cent, against 39 per cent in the 2012-14 batch. Overall, 71
per cent of students in the current batch has work experience.
Similarly, 81 per cent of the candidates at IIM-Bangalore has
work experience. And, more than a fourth of them come with two
to three years of experience.
At IIM-Kozhikode, freshers comprised 42 per cent last year,
and this year the provisional number is down to 39.5 per cent.
“Globally, candidates seeking admission in B-schools need to
have at least three years work experience,” said Achal Khanna,CEO, Society for Human Resource Management (India).
In difficult economic conditions, companies prefer experienced
candidates as they have a quicker learning curve and faster turnaround time, she added.
In India, 5-10 years back, most top B-schools had a large
number of freshers, except a few such as the Indian School of
Business, Hyderabad, where work experience has always
been a prerequisite.
But premier B-schools in India say that understanding
workplace dynamics is an important element in management courses. “We have seen that students with close to
two years’ experience have the best choices (for jobs) since they
can apply for laterals (placements for those with work experience)as well as opt for fresher jobs,”
said Sapna Agrawal, Head of Career Development Services, IIM-B.
The salary for laterals is generally 25 per cent higher than for fresh graduates. Those with four or more years of experience are likely to be hired by companies in
verticals similar to ones they had worked in earlier.
“However, a large number of companies hire for entry-level
managerial positions. Students looking for a change from their
earlier domain actually prefer to
join these positions,” said Agrawal.

OVERFLOWING INBOX? THESE NEW APPS CAN HELP YOU

TORONTO: Buried under emails? Losing control of an overflowing inbox? New apps are designed to help consumers deal with
seemingly endless streams of electronic mail.
Three apps, Dispatch and Boxer for the iPhone, and Boomerang for Android devices, try to make email management on
smartphones fast and simple.
Another app called Sanebox, which works on any platform
and costs between $2 and $20 each month, creates a folder in a
user's mailbox where it filters unimportant messages.
Algorithms in the app learn about a user's behavior to understand what he or she considers urgent.
"You think you're being productive by clearing stuff out
of your inbox, but no matter how good you are, more emails will
keep coming," said Dmitri Leonov, a vice president for Boston-based SaneBox.
The average office workers spends 13 hour each week
reading, writing and replying to emails, according to the McKinsey Global Institute, the research arm of McKinsey management consultant.
The Dispatch app works by communicating with 16 other apps, such as one for note-taking
and another linked to-do lists to simplify email. Users can send a link to Instapaper, an app for reading articles at a later time,
and can also customize messages to help them respond
to emails faster.
Boxer has a feature so users can "like" an email and put it on the app's to-do list for later processing. They can also request that a coworker handle
an email, and there are templates for quick responses, such as "Good idea," and "When do you need this?"
Both Dispatch and Boxer cost $4.99 and are available worldwide.
Boomerang, for Android devices, allows users to defer messages until later, schedule emails to be
sent at a particular time, and track responses. The free app only works with Gmail.
Leonov suggests people focus on dealing with urgent and important messages, rather than
trying to keep up with everything that lands in your inbox.
"Email is a to-do list that other people can write on for you,"
said Leonov.

Biz-Aakash Tab!

NEXT VERSION OF 'AAKASH' CLOSE TO GOOGLE NEXUS 7

The next version of the world's cheapest computer tablet will
boast features close to that of a Google Nexus 7, but could be more expensive than the current price of Rs 2,263.
The specifications of the third generation of Aakash (or Aakash
4) were released by the department of electronics and information technology (DeitY) on Monday and, according to HRD ministry officials, it will be priced at roughly Rs 3,000. Unlike in the past, the tender for Aakash
4 will carry minimum
specifications that the computer tablet has to meet. The bid
winner/manufacturer will have the liberty to equip the tablet
with more advanced features.
Aakash 4 is definitely an improvement over Aaksh 2 as the specifications suggest. In terms of CPU performance, Aaksh 4 will have a minimum of 3537 Antutu Benchmark score. According to Arun Prabhudesai, author of popular blog trak.in, this score
would make the tablet comparable to Google Nexus 7,which has a score of 3679 on
Antutu Benchmark. The Antutu Benchmark is an application that
gauges the speed and
performance of Android based mobile devices.
Among other features, Aakash 4 will weigh less than 500 grams
and have at least 4GB internal storage, external storage of 32
GB, a 7-inch display screen, dual-bootable operating system
(Ubuntu distro along with Android Jelly Bean), a battery
which will support at least three hours for online 720p video
playback and minimum five
hours on web browsing.
The computer tablet will support internet connectivity via WiFi and 2G, 3G, or 4G internet dongle and
also support external keyboard and mouse.
Aakash was first launched one and half years ago by former HRD minister Kapil Sibal and was touted as the world’s cheapest computer tablet at a price of Rs
2,750 per unit.
After that the tablet was revamped with better features and was even re-launched as Aakash 2 at a lower price of Rs.2,263 per unit in November last
year.

Biz-TELECOM NEWS!

‘FREE’ ROAMING COMES INTO EFFECT, AIRTEL & IDEA LEAD CHARGE

Bharti Airtel and
Idea Cellular today
announced ‘free’
roaming packs,
paving the way for cheaper roaming across India.
NEW DELHI: Telecom majors Bharti Airtel and Idea Cellular
today announced 'free' roaming packs, paving the way for
cheaper roaming across India.Other operators are expected to follow suit soon.
The country's biggest telecom company, Airtel on Monday
became the first to announce "free incoming calls" on roaming at a charge of Rs 5 per day. Airtel
subscribers can also opt for the one-time pack of Rs 79, which
provides free incoming calls on
roaming for 30 days.
However, these offers have been doled out to prepaid customers
only and there is no word about the same being extended to
postpaid users as of now. Airtel's offer was followed by a
similar announcement later in the day by Idea Cellular. The Birla-promoted company is launching
two new prepaid vouchers to offer 'free roaming' to its over
123 million subscribers in all 22
circles, without incurring any further charge.
According to Idea, the company will issue two vouchers priced
between Rs 230-240, and another priced between Rs.35-40 (denomination to vary
across circles), using which a subscriber can get the same
rates for local, STD, ISD calling and SMS, as those paid in the home circle.
The incoming roaming charges
will be 75 paise per minute for users who avail the Rs 35-40
voucher, whereas incoming is absolutely free for those who
avail Rs 230-240 voucher of Idea.
Idea users who recharge with the new vouchers will be able to enjoy the roaming benefits for 6 months from the date of recharge.
While Airtel and Idea have taken the lead in rolling out their 'free
roaming' offers, other major operators Vodafone and Reliance Communications are yet to make any announcements. Tata
DoCoMo has been offering a similar service for past one year.
When contacted, a Vodafone spokesperson declined to confirm if the company was
making any announcement
regarding its 'free roaming' offer. However, the company is expected to follow in the
footsteps of Airtel and Idea soon.
"We cannot commit as to if and when we will make any
announcement," said the spokesperson.
With the market leaders entering
the fray with their 'free roaming' offers, albeit with riders, other companies will be under pressure to make their
announcements sooner than later.
On June 17, Trai had announced that telecom operators can allow free national roaming if users
pay a fixed fee. This order comes into effect from July 1. However,Trai has also said that completely
free national roaming, as envisioned by telecom minister
Kapil Sibal, is not practical.
Trai chairman Rahul Khullar said operators have been mandated
to provide two types of roaming plan for customers.
"In one case, charges on incoming will be free but a fixed
charge will be levied and in the other regime you don't give free incoming and there will be no
fixed charges. The philosophy of authority is let customers decide
what they want... competition in the market will help in driving tariffs down," he said.
The regulator also reduced the national roaming charges by up to 57%. The cap on roaming charges prescribed by Trai in
2007 is Rs 1.40 per minute for outgoing local calls and Rs 2.40
per minute for outgoing STD calls.
This has now been reduced to Re.1 per minute for outgoing local calls and Rs 1.50 per minute for outgoing STD calls. Similarly, the ceiling for incoming calls while on national roaming has been
reduced from Rs 1.75 per minute to 75 paise per minute under the new order.
In a submission to Trai in April,Anil Ambani-led RCom had
countered the contention of
Bharti Airtel and Vodafone that 'free roaming' services will hit operators' revenues, saying the
growth in business will help recoup any losses and help
expand the overall market significantly.
